Wake up call

Giabest

A lot has happened since my last blog in terms of poker. I got off to a good start to the year profiting around 8k in the first two weeks and was feeling extremely positive and motivated during this time. I was running well in all forms of poker and was in profit for 6 max hyper SNGs, MTTs and heads up SNGs. However bad variance kicked in and I started playing all the wrong games. I was playing big MTTs and a lot of 6 max hyper turbo SNGs and didn’t really focus on giving commitment to heads up.

I was also playing players that really weren’t worth playing at the stakes. Rather than waiting to play fish, I played games against good regular players.

My thinking at the time was to get as many games in as possible to get  to get my money back when in reality it would have been better to just wait for the best possible games. I also lost money to a player where I broke a personal rule in which I previously had of loosing no more than 4 buy-ins to anyone in a single session. However it was really difficult for me to stick to this rule when one particular player was two tabling me that I didn’t recognise and he was calling all ins full stack with hands like 5 2 so I couldn’t bring myself to press decline when I was loosing buy-ins to him.

To cut a long story short, I lost 27/30 games to him before he declined me. Here was my next 3 weeks to the year after the good start:

I felt defeated after this and took a much-needed break from poker. I also had thoughts about quitting poker and getting a job but no real substantial thought or plan went into getting a job. It was just a tilted thought and statement to show my anger for the game with no real substance to the statement.

I then got introduced to a hypnotherapist called Elliot Roe by my brother Rocmar87. Here’s a brief introduction from him on what he does.

I’m Elliot Roe, a hypnotherapist based in Las Vegas who specialises in working with Poker players and MMA fighters to help them improve performance. I used hypnotherapy to help clients understand and resolve the root causes of any irrational behaviour that is effecting their game. This irrational behaviour could be tilt, anxiety, motivation issues, ego wars or a number of other issues effecting optimal performance at the table. For more information, watch my introduction to hypnotherapy and poker video http://www.pokervip.com/poker-coaching/videos/view/157 and on my testimonials page  http://www.poker-hypnosis.co.uk/testimonials/

Elliot has specially designed a heads up warm up MP3 now out on HUSNG.com. He also sells other MP3s, including a post session warm down, prep for live sessions and prep for online sessions. You can view more info on the packages, as well as a free sample, here: http://www.husng.com/content/mindset-pregame-warmup-heads-up-poker.

Usually I’m very negative towards this sort of thing but there are so many players who have benefited from his hypnotherapy and don’t tilt anymore as a result.

He has taught them to become emotionally detached from the games they play and as a result, their results have been extremely consistent so I thought it was certainly worth a try.

He charges $150  an hour or you can get a discounted price at $550 dollars for 5 hours. I certainly recommend it to any poker player because we’re only human and none of us like loosing so naturally emotions can take over.  After a few of  these sessions with Elliot I now feel above the game and take care with every decision with a much more logical, professional outlook on what is actually happening and not the usual negativity and thinking “I’m running way worse than I actually am” attitude of before.

In this time since working with Elliot Roe, I’ve improved my attitude towards poker so much and feel so emotionally uninvolved. The only MTTs I have played is the heads up hyper turbo knockout which is what I’m grinding anyway. I’ve been a lot more logical in situations and am starting to treat poker more like a job rather than just playing for the sake of playing at any given opportunity despite not being in the correct mindset or correct environment to grind. I was also feeling satisfied when I was winning and feeling frustrated when I was loosing. Now every time before I play , I listen to a mp3 from Elliot Roe that gets me in the zone so I’m so much more focused now when in a game and my mind is on the game only. When I’m starting to feel tilted or frustrated, or feel like I’m going into auto pilot mode, I realise it straight away. I take a short break and come back focused again. Since this time I’ve made money and instead of having the attitude of :

“I’ve dropped a lot of money. I want it back quickly to reach my peak again. Let me try bink something so I can get out of the hole sooner rather than later.”

As a result of this thought process, I then play bigger stakes and the hole gets deeper very quickly with MTTs. This is most probably the attitude of most gamblers and I would expect it’s emotionally very challenging.

However, now I take it one game at a time. All I can do is control what I am doing. More than likely, the result will be that I will come out on top. It’s only money and it’s important to keep poker and social time separate and have a clear perspective of the bigger picture and what’s really important.

I’m also going to get my fitness up because it was abysmal. I’ve bought a bicycle, play badminton once a week and play football competitively (using the term very widely) twice a week. Anyway I’m going to leave you with a few random pictures and a song my brother introduced to me to.

Millz Mills

Hey guys It’s Millz_uk here…

First and foremost, I would like to apologise for taking so long putting an update on how my year has been so far ( THIS WON’T HAPPEN AGAIN). January has been a decent month for me for many reasons. I really got off to a good start in the first week of the month then the variance kicked in. I experienced some crazy swings where I lost 40 buy ins in two days on two different occasions. I’m really glad I went through these swings because it made me a stronger player and thought me a lot about grinding and putting in a lot volume. In January, I played over 4k games which is the most games I have ever played in a single month.

At the start of this year I moved up to 200′s which meant I was gonna have to play some good  regs to prove myself that I belong at those stakes. I lost a few thousand $$$ but I was really happy with how I played. My EV was really good and thats all I care about!

This year I’m looking to go for SNE which is going to take a lot of hard grinding, working on my game and moving up stakes. Achieving SNE is not an easy thing to do but I will try my best.So far I earned just over 70k Vpps. I’m slightly behind SNE pace, but hopefully I will catch up soon as I’m looking to play higher stakes in the near future.

Last but not least I would like to thank everyone thats following and supporting  the WhyNotGrind.com blog. We really appreciate your support. I know we haven’t got off to a good start but we gonna try our best to achieve our target.

Thanks guys

Good Luck at the tables

Rocmar87 Update

Whats up people!! Rocmar87 here…

I was originally going to make a video blog, but i thought that i may just do a written blog while i’m at home in the UK, and maybe save the video blogging for when i have a major update!

I do have a few things however that i want to speak about.  Firstly i’m now back in the UK.  I flew back from Australia to spend Christmas and new years with my family, I will be going back to Australia within the next month or so.  I then plan to go to Costa Rica to meet up with some other players and hopefully be in a situation to play the WSOP main event.

Hopefully some other members of Whynotgrind decide to travel to Costa Rica/Vegas with me as they are both poker based trips!!

Goals for 2013

I think that these are goals that A LOT of players would benefit from.  Firstly my routine at the moment is literally wake up, jump straight on the computer and start to play poker.  I’ll play until I feel hungry, go and make myself something to eat, then jump straight back online and continue playing.  Before I know it it’s been about 7 or 8 hours and I’ve just been playing consistently.  I’ll then take the dog for a walk in a poor attempt to make me feel like I’ve done some exercise then I’ll come home and play more poker.  Obviously In Australia when I’m with my girlfriend life is far from this as I do a lot of things with her, but in the UK when I don’t have my GF with me, this is literally how I live excluding the occasional meal with friends or family or nights out with friends.

Needless to say living this kind of lifestyle with n0 routine is really unhealthy and I’m very aware of the toll its taking on me physically.  I’ve clearly put on weight, which I’m trying to do a lot about.  I’m not in TERRIBLE shape, but certainly not the ripped up mofo’ Iwould like to be :)

Another leak of mine is that I  have NO days off…… I love grinding, so it doesn’t feel like work to me…. It’s something that i enjoy. Seven or eight months ago i used to have a really strict schedule.  On Monday i would not touch or think about poker, Tuesday i wouldnt’ play but i would just study poker for a few hours… watching HUSNG tutorial videos and going over hand histories, and I’d then spend the rest of the week playing solid poker.  However now I don’t want to give myself a routine or a schedule and restrict myself.  If I feel like playing poker, I don’t want to not be able to just because its Monday and it’s my ”day off”

So here are some of my goals for 2013!

  • Join a gym and get in shape
  • Have some structure to my days
  • Have at least 1 day off per week
  • Legal stuff (for those of you that know me personally you will know what i mean by this :p )
  • Play WSOP main event in Las Vegas

Ill keep you updated on these as the year goes on (And I’ll expand on the ‘lawyer stuff’ later in the year) :)

I’ve already had a good start to the healthy eating goal so far this year!  Here’s a pic of the kind of meals I’ve been cooking for myself!
Image

Baked chicken, broccoli and sweet potato… Also notice my purple poker pyjama pants :D

I’ve also always really wanted a professional grind zone and have  finally set one up…Here’s a picture!

Image

I’m currently on my biggest ever downswing.  I wont talk about figures, but to me its a substantial amount of money.  It’s not really affecting me too much mentally though, and I have some of the best players in the heads up community around me making sure I keep in check… All i can do is continue to play my best and hope for the big upswing to come sooner rather than later!

I will say that I’ve never ran as bad, and I say this because  my EV line relative to my downswing is the biggest gap that iv ever experienced…each game feels like cooler after cooler after suck out after cooler (you get the picture)… but i mean when you stand back and look at the bigger picture…It doesn’t matter if i have had a rough month or two, I can still do everything i wanted before the downswing, can still play the same stakes I want, so no point in dwelling on it, just move on and focus on the future!!

I also got an amazing staking deal.  I didn’t intend to be staked this year, but i got offered such an amazing deal that i literally could not turn it down.  TEAM 651 stake me and if you are looking for a stake, hit up the link below!!! :)

http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/135/staking/team-651-jackstack99-ace0fdiamond-bubbleoutcas-staking-hu-hypers-sngs-1270659/

Thanks for reading guys.  I’m going to have 3 or 4 days off from poker following this big downswing.  I’m going to review my games and go over them to see if i am leaking money anywhere (and im sure there will be a few spots where i may have played different if i was running well).

Thanks so much for reading and good luck at the tables!!

Rocmar87

Giabest on start to the year.

We are now halfway through the first month of whynotgrind but unfortunately as a group, it hasn’t been the start we were hoping for on our journey to making 1 million in 2013.  There is however  many positives to take from our start!

Moca choca89 is running way under ev at the moment so all he has to do is keep doing what he’s doing and it’s more than likely he will have a nice upswing coming his way as he currently plays the biggest games in the group with an average stake of $816.

Millz_uk and Rocmar87 have put in the most volume from the group and are on track for supernova elite. Both got off to great starts but have run into some bad variance. Despite this Millz_uk is 17th on the leader board 36-100 dollar level and has actually put together the “best 100 game streak average profit” this year and Rocmar87 is 12th on the leader board 36-100 dollar level.

Flippetyflop has an average stake of $405 and has an roi of 2.7% so it’s a good start from him considering he took the first week off poker to recharge his batteries after his insane late supernova elite surge last year.

From a personal perspective it has been a decent start to the year, although it could of been a great one!

I went up to Nottingham with Flippetyflop and a friend to play the 300 pound, £150,000 pound guarantee, two day event. It got 787 runners and to cut a long story short, I made day two as a short stack, eventually finding myself with a stack of 1.1 million chips @ 20k/40k with 22 players remaining

With 50k for first prize I unfortunately  lost over half my stack as I got outran by aq when I was holding 10 10 with a short stack was also allin with a8. The pot would of put me in contention as I would of had around 2 million chips and I never recovered from that eventually coming out in 21st place.

Despite this disappointment I had to move on and I have grinded a lot since then and I’ve done decent with a few highlights. I’ve come 2nd in  a $25 dollar 6 max hyper mtt, also coming 4th the next day in the same mtt, with the lowlight of the past week losing 16 heads ups in a row. My graph will give you a clearer indication of my year so far.

Moca Choca I Grind WhyNot Episode 1

Hello my grinders, wannabees and friends. This is my first post for the WhyNot Grind blog, I will be posting all blog posts on this site and on my own. http://www.mocachoca.com

2012 Ended with me achieving Supernova Elite which in the world of poker is pretty big, less than 1,000 people have achieved this ever. Considering the millions of poker players it’s a very tiny %. It’s a little up the pyramid but still not quite Illuminati status so I won’t brag too much about it.

I have been catching up a tonne in London and now am really ready for the new year, and really focusing on the important things such as: Making money, building a stable future, maintaining poker success, maintaining a good relationship, getting the clothing brand out there and last but not least furthering myself as an artist. I guess there my new years goals.

I am now part of a group called whynotgrind. Basically the lads from the ends want to make a $million in a year between 5 of us. Guess it’s mainly something to motivate, grind hard, keep focussed etc. I feel we have a strong possibility to make this goal. It means me probably making around $300k so it’s a nice target, I have done it one year before so if I focus hard enough I should be able too do it again.

I hope everyone had a good 2012, I hope you guys like the blogs this year. I will try and keep as active as I can. Enjoy the 1st episode of in the new Video blog series: Moca Choca I Grind Whynot.

Happy new year people.

HU4Rollzzzz!!!

I’m having a heads up hyper challenge similar to my one against the one I had against Moca Choca earlier on this year, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tU92V7P8e78 except for this one there isn’t any Nandos involved, and there’s a chance I could win… or even lose a decent amount of money!

You can follow the action later today by logging into Pokerstars/or by following the 2+2 thread below

whynotgrind? On Christmas Day?

Flippetyflop here.

A lot of you guys will already know, but over the course of the year I’ve been trying to attain Supernova Elite, the highest possible Pokerstars VIP level.

To do this I have been attempting to accrue 1million VPPS throughout 2012, however due to a number of reasons with 31 days left of the year the picture looks like this :P

Screen Shot 2012-12-01 at 13.32.21

It’s going to be a pretty manic month in terms of volume, and I’ll probably not want to see a hand in poker after it, but I still feel confident!

There are a few HUSNG pros in London at the mo and I think there’s a night out tonight with me, Moca,Millz_uk, Gifted, Skai and Old Time Gin, but after tonight it’s GG social life. One thing I like about the poker community is even after playing another player game after game trying to take away their $$$$, you can still meet up with them in person and get on really well.

I’m probably going to need a day of recovery, but from Monday if you search me up on Stars and there’ll be a very good chance you’ll see me on a few tables grinding away :-) ……..

I’ve also just had my sickest month ever by quite a distance and I’m feeling pretty confident in my game at the moment, wish me luck!
